BRAVA was founded because we wanted to be the change that we desired to see in the world. Here is our origin story.
In January 2018, with my doctorate in Industrial-Organizational Psychology and with 7 years of organization development consulting with many Seattle-based healthcare and non-profit organizations under my belt, I was looking for my next career opportunity. I had been invited to lead two workshops for a very impressive group of women (my fellow Duke University alumnae), ranging in age from roughly 25-75 years old. I was surprised to find out that, regardless of age, many of them harbored secrets: either they were not fulfilled in their success, lacked confidence in their professional roles, didn’t know how to move forward toward their ideal versions of themselves or their lives, or didn’t know what that next stage of life even looked like — to say nothing of the struggle it was to climb the corporate ladder in the first place!
I knew they all inherently had the strength, courage, and the answers inside of themselves to live their best lives. They just needed someone– a coach– to draw it out of them. I also realized that if this impressive group of women harbored these secrets, then probably many other women did, too! I felt called to address this need. I knew I could be an asset to individuals and organizations seeking to better themselves and reach their potential and purpose. I envisioned a company of like-minded professionals and the widespread impact it could have on helping women in their careers, and ultimately, on society as a whole. The prospect was both inspiring and exciting, and so, in the week between my two workshops, Brava Coaching & Consulting was born!
I named the company “Brava” because I love a good double entrendre. The root of the male-gendered related word, “bravo,” means ‘bold’ or ‘brave’ and I knew the basis of my coaching would be to encourage my clients to “be bold” and “embrace change” in their lives and workplaces. I also wanted to draw attention to the importance of celebrating the frequent small wins we, as women, achieve each day on our way to bigger and better things. So often, the standards we are held to and hold for ourselves don’t allow us to have gratitude or receive accolades for all that we do (well). If we don’t stop and “give ourselves a hand,” who will cheer for us and our sisters? And we are more than deserving of a resounding standing ovation for all that we contribute to our many societal realms (e.g., home, work, school, professional guilds, support & recovery groups, social circles, and so on)! And above all, we are deserving of the ability to ask for help without shame. No one succeeds in a vacuum.
So reach out and grab our hand — Brava Coaching & Consulting is here to help YOU! Whether you’re here seeking individual coaching or organizational consulting, we will custom tailor a program to suit your unique circumstances, much like every diva soprano gets individualized attention from the costume department, her voice coach, and the operatic director. We value our personal relationships with our clients and want to see each one succeed based on their own unique potential, talent, and organizational context!
In closing, I personally believe that every woman has the capacity to be an influential, inspiring, and effective leader and to find contentment and purpose in her life no matter how many years she’s graced this planet. If you believe it, you can be it…with daily, intentional practice, of course! If you are looking for a coach, I hope you’ll invite me (or.a Brava coach) into your life to help guide you to this version of yourself. She’s beautiful, vibrant, impactful…and already within you!
If you are here because you are seeking consulting expertise, please know that we operate from a touchstone of positive psychology-based scientific best practices, choosing to believe that every organization is capable of conquering even their most confounding challenges, as long as they are open to trusting the data (and not just their guts!) and have the courage to change what needs to be changed in the short-term to get a meaningful long-term ROI.
In gratitude until we meet,
Dr. Marisa Bossen
